چکیده

We present radio, optical/NIR, and X-ray observations of the afterglow of the short-duration GRB 130603B, and uncover a break in the radio and optical bands at ≈ 0.5 d after the burst, best explained as a jet break with an inferred jet opening angle of ≈ 4 − 8. GRB 130603B is only the third short GRB with a radio afterglow detection to date, and the first time that a jet break is evident in the radio band. We model the temporal evolution of the spectral energy distribution to determine the burst explosion properties and find an isotropic-equivalent kinetic energy of ≈ (0.6 − 1.7)×1051 erg and a circumburst density of ≈ 5×10−3 − 30 cm−3. From the inferred opening angle of GRB 130603B, we calculate beaming-corrected energies of Eγ ≈ (0.5 − 2)× 1049 erg and EK ≈ (0.1 − 1.6)× 1049 erg. Along with previous measurements and lower limits we find a median opening angle of ≈ 10. Using the all-sky observed rate of 10 Gpc−3 yr−1, this implies a true short GRB rate of ≈ 20 yr−1 within 200 Mpc, the Advanced LIGO/VIRGO sensitivity range for neutron star binary mergers. Finally, we uncover evidence for significant excess emission in the X-ray afterglow of GRB 130603B at & 1 d and conclude that the additional energy component could be due to fall-back accretion or spin-down energy from a magnetar formed following the merger.

The late-time afterglow of the extremely energetic short burst GRB 090510 revisited

Context. The Swift discovery of the short burst GRB 090510 has raised considerable attention mainly because of two reasons: first, it had a bright optical afterglow, and second it is among the most energetic events detected so far within the entire GRB population (long plus short). The afterglow of GRB 090510 was observed with Swift/UVOT and Swift/XRT and evidence of a jet break around 1.5 ks a...

Jet-breaks in the X-ray Light-Curves of Swift GRB Afterglows

In the set of 236 GRB afterglows observed by Swift between January 2005 and March 2007, we identify 30 X-ray light-curves whose power-law fall-off exhibit a steepening (”break”) at 0.1–10 day after trigger, to a decay steeper than t−1.5. For most of these afterglows, the X-ray spectral slope and the decay indices before and after the break can be accommodated by the standard jet model although ...

Decay phases of Swift X-ray afterglows and the forward-shock model.

The X-ray flux of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows monitored by the Swift satellite from January 2005 to July 2006 displays one to four phases of flux power-law decay. In chronological order, they are: the GRB tail, the 'hump', the standard decay and the post-jet-break decay. More than half of the GRB tails can be identified with the large-angle emission produced during the burst (but arriv...

Grb Afterglows from Anisotropic Jets

Some progenitor models of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) (e.g., collapsars) may produce anisotropic jets in which the energy per unit solid angle is a power-law function of the angle (∝ θ −k). We calculate light curves and spectra for GRB afterglows when such jets expand either in the interstellar medium or in the wind medium. In particular, we take into account two kinds of wind: one (n ∝ r −3/2) pos...

Optical and X-Ray Observations of GRB 060526: A Complex Afterglow with An Achromatic Jet Break

We obtained 98 R-band and 18 B, r, i images of the optical afterglow of GRB 060526 (z = 3.21) with the MDM 1.3m, 2.4m, and the PROMPT telescopes in Cerro Tololo over the 5 nights following the burst trigger. Combining these data with other optical observations reported in GCN and the Swift-XRT observations, we compare the optical and X-ray afterglow light curves of GRB 060526. Both the optical ...
